The global offshore wind industry is undergoing a period of significant upheaval. Following its announcement of a strategic restructuring in 2025, Corio Generation—one of the world’s largest offshore wind developers—continues to face the ripple effects of its business contraction.

On April 6, 2026, South Korean media reported a major development: Corio Generation has completely withdrawn from the South Korean offshore wind power market, and its 1.3 trillion won (approximately 5.9 billion yuan) investment plan will not be realized. According to reports, all employees of Corio Generation’s South Korean subsidiary, including the general manager of the South Korean division, officially left the company on March 31. South Korean media also revealed that Corio Generation will not only terminate its operations in South Korea but will also suspend its global business activities.

As a subsidiary incubated by Macquarie Green Investment Group in 2022, Corio Generation positions itself as a global offshore wind developer and has rapidly emerged as a leading player thanks to its expert team and extensive project pipeline. Between 2022 and 2024, the company expanded its operations across Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and the Americas, with its project pipeline reaching 30GW at its peak. It not only joined the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA) but was also shortlisted for the “Offshore Wind Developer of the Year” award at the 2023 Wind Energy Investment Awards, establishing itself as a rising star in the industry.

The turning point came in 2025, when, facing challenges such as rising industry costs, Macquarie scrapped its plan to sell its stake in Corio Generation. The company subsequently initiated a restructuring, shifting its focus to smaller-scale projects with clear development pathways, and abandoned the Sceirde Rocks project in Ireland, resulting in a loss of €35.4 million in performance guarantees.

From its meteoric rise in 2022 to becoming a key player in the global offshore wind power sector by 2024, and then to the complete suspension of its global operations in 2026, this industry star—which once held a project pipeline of 30GW—completed its roller-coaster journey in just four years.

Today, Corio Generation’s primary focus is no longer on expanding its global footprint, but rather on how to properly manage its portfolio of outstanding assets and liabilities.
