Adani Wind has recently commissioned a 5MW wind turbine prototype in Gujarat, India. As the largest-capacity domestic onshore wind turbine in India to date, it marks a critical breakthrough in the country’s high-power wind technology and local manufacturing industry.
The turbine boasts a 185-metre rotor diameter and 91.2-metre blades, it is one of the largest wind turbine models currently in use in India. It has been specially developed for medium and low wind speed scenarios, significantly enhancing power generation efficiency and optimizing land resource utilization. Developed jointly by Adani Wind and Germany’s Wind To Energy (W2E), the unit combines world-class engineering with India-specific site adaptability, balancing cutting-edge technology and operational suitability.
Adani Wind Power is a business division of the Adani Group in India, specializing in the manufacturing of wind turbine generators. The company was established in 2016 and is the core vehicle for the Adani Group to expand its renewable energy portfolio and promote the globalization of green electricity industries. As a large multinational conglomerate founded by Gautam Adani, the former richest man in India, in 1988, the wind power business of the Adani Group has become a crucial part of its energy expansion strategy.
Adani Wind is the only Indian turbine OEM ranked in BloombergNEF’s Global Top 15, representing the core international competitiveness of India’s wind manufacturing sector. The company is accelerating its global expansion: capacity will be scaled from 2.25GW to 5GW, with a long-term target of 10GW. It has also launched overseas exports, covering markets including the U.S., Australia, Brazil, and Southeast Asia.
In recent years, India’s wind manufacturing ecosystem has expanded rapidly, with domestic total capacity surging from around 12GW in 2022 to nearly 20GW. It has built a complete industrial chain covering nacelles, blades, towers and key components, gradually emerging as a major hub in the global clean energy supply chain.
The global wind market is undergoing continuous restructuring. Global new wind installations reached 169GW in 2025. India surpassed the U.S. and Germany to become the largest wind market outside China, with cumulative installed capacity of around 55GW (ranking fourth globally) and untapped potential exceeding 1,100GW. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), if India achieves an annual increase of 15 GW in installed capacity by 2030, it will account for nearly 10% of global wind demand, becoming a key growth market for global wind power.
