Belgian marine engineering firm DEME recently announced it has secured a contract for a major Japanese offshore wind project, marking the official Asia Pacific debut of Vestas’ high-capacity V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine.
The Oga-Katagami-Akita offshore wind farm is located off the coast of Akita Prefecture, Japan, with a total installed capacity of 315 MW. It is developed by a consortium comprising leading Japanese energy enterprises including JERA and J-POWER.

Under the project plan, a total of 21 flagship V236-15.0 MW turbines from Vestas will be deployed. This represents the first firm order for this large-capacity model across the Asia Pacific region. After gaining solid presence in Europe, the turbine is also being commercially applied for the first time outside Europe (excluding China). Additionally, it stands as one of Japan’s landmark projects for the large-scale adoption of high-power offshore wind turbines.
Relevant construction arrangements for the whole industrial chain have been finalized. Kajima Corporation takes charge of the fabrication, construction and installation of turbine foundations. Meanwhile, the turbine installation work is undertaken by Japan Offshore Marine, a joint venture between DEME and Japan’s Penta-Ocean Construction. The specialized jack-up vessel Sea Challenger will carry out offshore operations in the second half of 2027.
In accordance with the construction schedule, the 21 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines will be delivered in batches starting in 2026. On-site installation and commissioning will be completed in 2027, and the entire wind farm is expected to be fully commissioned and put into commercial operation in June 2028.
