To break free from reliance on imported wind power technology and firmly safeguard national energy security, Poland’s National Center for Energy Analysis (NCAE) has rolled out an ambitious plan: it is fully developing a 5 MW wind turbine entirely designed and manufactured in Poland.
NCAE is an integrated industry-academia-research innovation platform jointly established by three state-owned critical infrastructure enterprises: Polish power grid operator PSE, gas transmission firm Gaz-System, and oil pipeline operator PERN.
The technical solutions and design framework for the domestically developed 5 MW turbine have been finalized, and the center is actively engaging potential investors.
Instead of developing technology from scratch, the domestic turbine project integrates mature industrial technologies available within Poland. A spokesperson for PSE disclosed that around 75% of components for this onshore turbine model can be supplied locally. This move effectively mitigates the risk of supply disruptions from overseas supply chains and strongly supports domestic manufacturers.
Given Poland’s climatic conditions, onshore wind power is the renewable energy source with the lowest operational costs. Developing indigenous turbines will further boost industrial growth, drive technological upgrades, and generate a large number of jobs.
Poland’s pursuit of homegrown wind turbines is not a new initiative. Earlier, Polish firm Grenevia put forward the idea of building domestic turbines. Although the company later partnered with Germany’s Eno Energy to shorten the time-to-market, its long-term goal of maximizing local component sourcing and domestic services remains unchanged.
Industry reports estimate that Poland’s onshore wind market will reach approximately EUR 49 billion between 2026 and 2040. If the country adds 1,500 to 2,000 MW of new wind capacity each year, annual industrial investment will hit nearly EUR 3.9 billion. Industry insiders argue that this massive economic value should circulate within the domestic economy to offset expenditure on fossil fuel imports.
