1.6GW! Construction Begins on World's Second-Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Recently, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) formally granted Swedish energy giant Vattenfall an irrevocable permit for the Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farm. The issuance of this critical permit marks the formal entry into force of the full final investment decision (FID) for the Nordlicht wind cluster, with a total installed capacity of 1.6 GW (including Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2). Construction of the project's first phase will commence within the year.

The Nordlicht wind farm cluster is located 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea. It will uniformly install 112 Vestas V236-15.0 MW wind turbines, with 68 units deployed at Nordlicht 1 and 44 units at Nordlicht 2. Installation of monopile foundations for North Light 1 is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of this year, with North Light 2 following approximately one year later. Both wind farms are planned to achieve grid connection and commence operations simultaneously in 2028.

Upon commissioning, Nortdlicht 1 will become Germany's largest offshore wind farm, while the entire Nordlicht 1 wind cluster will rank as the world's second-largest offshore wind farm.
