After 10 Years Away, Suzlon Officially Returns to Europe to Compete Head-On with Wind Power Giants Vestas and Nordex
April 22, 2026

On April 21, major news arrived in the global wind power industry: Indian wind turbine OEM Suzlon launched its new Blue Sky product platform in Spain, unveiling two flagship turbines – the 5 MW S175 and 6.3 MW S163 – and formally announcing its return to the European wind power market.

Days earlier, Wood Mackenzie’s Global Wind Turbine OEM Market Share 2025 report confirmed that Suzlon had re-entered the global top 15 wind turbine OEM rankings, placing 15th.

As India’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, Suzlon once held a strong position in Europe. In 2015, amid global wind market volatility and debt pressure, the company sold its German subsidiary Senvion (formerly the well-known European brand Repower) to a U.S. private equity firm for about €1 billion, exiting Europe to focus on its home market.

Following more than a decade of restructuring and expansion, Suzlon now operates in 17 countries, with a cumulative installed capacity of 21.5 GW (15.5 GW in India and 6 GW overseas). Its return to Europe targets the onshore wind segment, putting it in direct competition with European incumbents including Vestas, Nordex and Enercon.

Europe’s onshore wind market is entering a dual growth phase of repowering and new-build expansion. Aging turbines are being replaced by high-capacity units, while demand for new projects continues to rise. Girish Tanti, Executive Vice Chairman of Suzlon, stated that Europe has roughly 100 GW of new-build potential and 17 GW of repowering potential for onshore wind, driving strong demand for large, site-specific turbines.

The two new turbines are custom-designed for Europe: the 5 MW S175 is optimized for low-wind sites, and the 6.3 MW S163 for medium-to-high-wind conditions. Both meet European regulatory and grid codes, reach a maximum tip height of 250 meters, and incorporate digital operation and full-lifecycle optimization. Development drew on operational data from Suzlon’s 21.5 GW global installed base.

Suzlon said the Blue Sky platform is a core part of its Suzlon 2.0 strategy, with an initial focus on the European market.
