On June 15, leading Indian wind turbine manufacturer Suzlon officially launched its brand-new S175 5 MW wind turbine, which has been successfully commissioned at the Vijayanagar project in Karnataka. Suzlon stated that the S175 is currently the tallest and highest-capacity onshore wind turbine in India.

According to Suzlon, the new S175 turbine is developed based on over 30 years of technical experience and massive operational data accumulated from the company’s 15.5 GW fleet of installed turbines. It is custom-engineered to fit India’s medium-and-low wind speed zones, domestic grid conditions and on-site operation and maintenance environments. Boasting a 175-metre rotor diameter and a 160-metre hybrid tower, the turbine reaches a maximum blade tip height of 247.5 metres, enabling it to capture steadier and higher-quality wind currents at high altitudes and greatly boost power generation efficiency.

Technically, the unit adopts advanced aerodynamic design, carbon girder blade technology and intelligent control systems to deliver outstanding performance in low-wind conditions. It is also India’s first turbine compatible with Flexible Dispatch Renewable Energy (FDRE), supporting wind-solar-storage hybrid projects, real-time power trading and firm power supply solutions, with remarkably enhanced flexibility and grid compatibility.

Girish Tanti, Executive Vice Chairman of the Suzlon Group, commented that compared with conventional turbines, the S175 not only delivers substantially higher power output but also unlocks numerous low-wind sites previously deemed uneconomical for development. This effectively expands India’s viable wind development areas and improves project returns on investment.

Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy of India, remarked that the launch of this turbine fully demonstrates India’s innovation capacity in clean energy and will give strong impetus to the country’s energy transition and large-scale growth of its wind power sector.
